Membership Application

Legacy is a home school support group made up of and serving like-minded families in the Charleston area. A board of actively homeschooling couples, elected by current members, provides prayerful and biblical servant leadership. Legacy strives to develop and nurture relationships among member families based on Galatians 5:22, as well as encourage excellence in education.

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." -Galatians 5:22

Membership is open to persons who...

  • demonstrate a willingness to actively support and lovingly cooperate with the members of the Association as we work together to educate our children in a manner that is pleasing to God
  • currently homeschool at least one child abiding by South Carolina homeschool laws ( see http://www.schomeeducatorsassociation.org/accountability.php for more information). Please note that children enrolled in the South Carolina Virtual Charter Public school are not considered homeschooled students and are not eligible for membership in Legacy. If any child in your family is enrolled in the SC Virtual Charter Public school or other similar distance learning public school program, your family is not eligible for membership in Legacy. (Note: high school students receiving dual credit through another institution – e.g. Trident Tech – while being homeschooled ARE eligible for membership in Legacy.)
  • adhere to the Legacy Statement of Faith, Association Bylaws, and the Guidelines for Field Trips, Classes and Annual Standardized Testing
  • are members in good standing of a local church
  • commit to assist in at least one activity of the Association (see page 3)
  • pay the current annual dues

Membership benefits include, but are not limited to...

  • opportunities to meet and make friends with other home educators
  • dads' fellowship/equipping meetings
  • monthly meetings for planning, equipping and fellowship
  • field trips
  • regular social opportunities for children such as park days and parties
  • a lending library of books and tapes
  • standardized achievement testing
  • opportunities for group classes/socialization in academic areas, sports and fine arts
  • access to the Legacy email loop for information

Legacy also strongly encourages membership in the following organizations...

  • HSLDA – Home School Legal Defense Organization. HSLDA's mission is: "To preserve and advance the fundamental, God-given, constitutional right of parents and others legally responsible for their children to direct their education. In so doing, we rely on two fundamental freedoms—parental rights and religious freedom. We advocate for these freedoms in the courtrooms, before government officials, and in the public arena. Additionally, we assist other educational organizations in similar activities, where possible and appropriate." Once you join Legacy, you will be sent a discount code which qualifies for a 15% discount on HSLDA membership. For more information and to join HSLDA, go to www.hslda.org.

  • SCHEA – South Carolina Home Educator's Association. SCHEA was formed in 1987 to support home educators in South Carolina and to perform a lead role to create legal protection for home education in South Carolina. SCHEA, working with many other concerned individuals and organizations, was instrumental in convincing the state legislature to create the first South Carolina law requiring recognition of home schooling in 1988. Today, committed volunteer home school families from across the state continue to work through SCHEA to create opportunities and support to the home school community and promote an accurate and favorable image of home education in South Carolina. Currently Legacy is a member of SCHEA as a support group, therefore, once you join Legacy, you will be eligible for a 40% discount on SCHEA membership. For more information and to join SCHEA, go to www.schomeeducatorsassociation.org.

Committees

We have changed the formats of the committees. Many committees will have one chairperson with several leaders of smaller committees within that group (for example the Scholastic event committee will likely have one chair and 5 leaders, each with several members) It is a committee within a committee to help facilitate coordination with the board, with other members and to help raise our ability to be involved!

Each family is required to select a minimum of one committee to serve on from the list below. Please sign up for as many as you feel you can effectively serve on. The committee(s) you select will be the where you will serve for this coming year.

Guidelines for Field Trips, Classes and Annual Standardized Testing

To the outside community, we are witnesses not only for homeschooling but also of Christ. Also, we want to ensure our children get the most benefit from our classes and field trips together. For these reasons, the following guidelines have been delineated:

  1. Parents and children are expected to be attentive, courteous, and cooperative. Parents are responsible for their children's behavior and must ensure that their children are appropriately responsive to any adult giving instruction or assistance. We also ask that parents be exemplary role models and not talk with each other during instructional periods.

  2. Please have your children dress neatly, modestly and appropriately for the event. Please, choose modest length shorts, skirts, tops and t-shirts without controversial graphics or words.

  3. The field trip coordinator/adult chaperone/class instructor has the authority to speak to your child about disruptive behavior. Respectful and prompt obedience is expected. Repeated offenses may lead to a child being asked not to participate in events for a specific time set by the Board.

  4. Check beforehand with the event coordinator as to the appropriateness of bringing young children. If it is appropriate to bring them, please be prepared to remove them should they become a distraction to others. Behavior that is normal and acceptable for young children may simply not be appropriate at certain events, especially if it impairs the learning of others.

  5. Field Trips, Classes and Testing coordinated and organized by Legacy are only for homeschoolers unless designated differently by the instructor, group guide, or event coordinator.

I agree with the guidelines above.
